The Black Sea offers excellent opportunities for diving in Bulgaria. There are several diving centres in Bulgaria including Nessebar, Sozopol Kavarna and Varna.

Scuba Diving in the region of Varna
This area offers excellent shipwreck dive sites and dive sites with underwater caves and caverns close to Varna. Most of the sites are accessible from the shore or by small boats. Diving conditions are good in the temperate waters although the visibility can be limited. The best time for diving activities is between March and October. During the summer period the air temperature in Varna can reach 35°C and the water temperature 23°C between June and September. Temperate water diving equipment is recommended. Varna is also an excellent place to start diving as the coastline topography allows shallow and protected waters to accommodate the training of beginners.

Shipwreck dives include:

  • Durankulak – two Greek sunken ships - “Anna Maria” and “Kostas”, which wrecked on underwater rocks. The dive site is at depth between 4m to 8m. Durankulak is situated at 95km to the North of Varna, near the Romanian border.
  • Cape Shabla – during World War II a German cargo ship was defeated by a Russian submarine. The dive site is at depth 7m to 13m. Shabla is situated at 85km North of Varna.
  • Albena – this is a dive site to the wrecks of a still unknown ship at depth of 18m, 4 km from the sea shore. It is situated in the tourist resort “Albena” at 20km North of Varna.

Cave dives include:

  • Tyulenovo – cave dives in the vicinity “Martina” and “Samotnika” (The Lonely cliff). There are a lot of caves and semi-caves with unique shapes. The dive site is at depth between 7m to 12m and it offers beautiful sights for underwater photography. It is situated at 70 km to the North of Varna.
  • Shabla – This is a deep dive before the lighthouse “Shabla” an appealing place, an extension of the rocky coastline falling suddenly from a depth of 5m - 7m to 25m - 27m. The dive site is situated at 85km to the North of Varna.
